In the Foursquare service, badges are rewards players can earn for checking-into various places. Once a badge is earned by a player, it will remain on that user's profile indefinitely. The Foursquare staff are very secretive about how to unlock many badges. There are a handful of introductory badges that are earned as milestones in usage. Some badges are tied to venue "tags" and the badge earned depends on the tags applied to the venue. [1] Other badges may be specific to a city, venue, event, or date. Some badges utilize identical icons, but are earned differently. There are a few known badges that are named similarly, but applied differently, specifically Far Far Away, Trifecta and I'm on a Boat.

If you live in a part of the country where you don't have to drive in the snow, stop reading now. Nobody likes you. However, if you have to get out in the white flaky stuff to get to and from work, run errands, pick up kids, I hope you appreciate this.
It's a bit cliché-ish, but many of the social media pros say that businesses need to participate in social media because they no longer control THE conversation. That's true. But companies have never controlled THE conversation, in my opinion. But companies can have control over THEIR conversation. Hear me / read me out. Everybody is told that when you drive in the snow, you should take your time, be patient and leave some space around you. Take your time. Be patient. Leave some space. Sounds a bit like social media. Then when you're out on the road, you never want to change direction aggressively, slam on the brakes, or lose control of your car. Don't change direction aggressively. Don't slam on the brakes. Don't lose control. Sounds a bit like social media. And if you follow these rules, you can steer your car to where you want to go, barring an accident. And at times, everybody has an accident. There might be times where you slip or fishtail a bit, but you're in control and get to where you want to go. Sounds a bit like social media. So while companies can't control THE conversation, they can certainly steer THEIR conversation where they want to take it. So what about those people in the SUVs who floor it, ride bumpers and pass people in slippery conditions. Don't worry, they'll end up in the ditch. Just like THEIR conversations will. What do you think? Here’s my top 9 Twitter Directories to make sure you are listed on:
- Twellow – Right now the crown jewel of Twitter directories. If you only bother with one on this list, choose Twellow.
- Wefollow – My personal favorite for the simple design and usability. Built by Digg co-founder Kevin Rose.
- Twittercounter – My 2nd favorite as it acts as a statistical tool as well.
- Twitterholic – Another one of those directories that ranks users by followers. Kind of fun to see where you rank based on filters.
- JustTweetIt – A directory of Twitter users sorted by categories. Nothing groundbreaking here, but just another large directory to list yourself to be found.
- Geofollow – GeoFollow allows you to list yourself geographically and categorically.
- Tweetfind – Free Twitter yellow and white pages directory. Not the best looking directory, but front page on Google for “twitter directories”, so worth the listing.
- Twibs – Only really applicable to businesses, but everyone is selling something right?
- Hashtags – This is simply a directory of hashtag users on Twitter.
What do you think? Is their value in these directories? Do you use them?
A couple days ago, we launched several new features aimed at enhancing the professional conversation in LinkedIn groups. We call one of those features “following”.
Following makes it easier for you to see contributions made by your connections and other people you value within your groups. To get you started, you’re already following all of your connections and they’re following you. But it doesn’t stop with your connections: to follow someone who is not a connection, just click “Follow Their Name” under their name on a discussion page or on the Member page in your group.
Now when you go to your My Groups page, you’ll see updates about what the specific people you’re following have contributed to the groups you share. Updates from the people you’re following (and your updates to the people who are following you) also appear on the Overview page of each group you share. All of this makes it faster and easier to interact with your own personal “group within the group.”
For more information about Following, check out our FAQ.
I am a huge fan of what LinkedIn could do, but the site's functionality hasn't kept up with other sites. I think this is a solid improvement and certainly gives hardcore users another valuable feature.
Facebook is the primary social network on which consumer-focused companies maintain one or more profiles, cited by 83 percent of respondents compared with 45 percent for Twitter. Business-to-business companies maintain a presence on both social sites with 77 percent maintaining a profile on Facebook and 73 percent on Twitter.
Among those using social media for business purposes in their jobs, 62 percent visit company or brand profiles on social networking sites and 55 percent search for business information on these sites.
It's interesting that a higher percentage of B2B companies have a Twitter profile, compared to B2C companies. I would have flip-flopped the two.
LinkedIn had a chance to be THE place for businesses but just simply dropped the ball. That's my "expert" evaluation.
